Video Format Guide: MP4, WebM, MKV, AVI — Which Should You Use?

A practical guide to the most common video formats, when to use each one, and how to convert between them.

The Most Common Video Formats

Choosing the right video format depends on where your video will be watched and what you need from it. Here's a breakdown of the formats that matter in 2026.

MP4 (H.264/H.265)

MP4 is the universal standard. It plays on virtually every device, browser, and platform. Use it when you need maximum compatibility. H.264 is well-supported everywhere; H.265 (HEVC) offers 50% better compression but older devices may not support it.

WebM (VP9/AV1)

WebM is Google's open, royalty-free video format. It's optimized for web embedding and offers excellent compression with VP9 or AV1 codecs. All modern browsers support WebM. Use it for web-first video content.

MKV (Matroska)

MKV is a flexible container that can hold virtually any codec, multiple audio tracks, and subtitle streams. It's popular for archiving and media libraries but isn't universally supported by mobile devices.

AVI

AVI is a legacy format from Microsoft. Files tend to be large and the format lacks modern features like streaming support. Convert AVI to MP4 for better compression and compatibility.
